Very great and its just volume 1。 Proud to be filipino。

I burned through the netflix show and did the same with this。 I love my horror with a solid folkloric backdrop, not just senseless violence, and this was awesome。 Part PI story/supernatural procedural, part creature feature, wholly satisfying。 Moving right on to volume 2。

Such a cool world, blending Filipino mythology with the comic noir genre。 One of the creator’s big influences was Rod Serling and thats all i need to hear to know I’ll love something。 The artwork rules! Give this a shot! It’s also a Netflix anime show which I gotta check out now。

2,5/5。 Outstanding black and white art!! Unfortunately the story isn't at the same level。 Not bad, the universe is solid enough, but the characters, the dialogues and the cockiness from another decade just didn't click with me。 2,5/5。 Outstanding black and white art!! This is a series of short stories about crimes involving supurnatural beings, linked by the investigator, a somewhat mysterious woman with supernatural servants of her own, who helps the police with these incidents outside their training。

I love this graphic novel! Sadly when it first came out in 2008 I didn’t get to read it but after watching the Netflix adaptation (which I enjoyed very much) I finally got to read the first volume which I enjoyed a lot! I cannot wait to read the next volumes!

I moved my review for the print version of this onto the Kindle version because Goodreads has this weird alphabet glitch that puts the print version at the top of the alphabet for all my books。3。5, rounded up。 The stories sometimes feel a bit like standard detective fare, but I really enjoyed the usage of creatures from Philippine mythology to sort of turn these stories on their head。 There's a monster of the week formula at work here, but it's interesting enough to hold my interest, and they're I moved my review for the print version of this onto the Kindle version because Goodreads has this weird alphabet glitch that puts the print version at the top of the alphabet for all my books。3。5, rounded up。 The stories sometimes feel a bit like standard detective fare, but I really enjoyed the usage of creatures from Philippine mythology to sort of turn these stories on their head。 There's a monster of the week formula at work here, but it's interesting enough to hold my interest, and they're definitely setting the stage to expand out the universe and our understanding of the main character。 。。。more

I bought it because I enjoyed the Netflix anime and listening to the writers talk about the development of Trese on the accompanying "after show。" I think one of the creators said that they wanted to create a Filipino version of Hellblazer, which made we want to read it even more。It's easy to compare Trese to Constantine but what gives the former an advantage over the latter for me is the inclusion of a subtle lesson in Filipino mythology and superstition at the end of each adventure。 It's in th I bought it because I enjoyed the Netflix anime and listening to the writers talk about the development of Trese on the accompanying "after show。" I think one of the creators said that they wanted to create a Filipino version of Hellblazer, which made we want to read it even more。It's easy to compare Trese to Constantine but what gives the former an advantage over the latter for me is the inclusion of a subtle lesson in Filipino mythology and superstition at the end of each adventure。 It's in the form of a brief journal entry written by Trese and provides a brief description of the supernatural entities mentioned in the story。 Each story begins with a map of the area where it'll take place and ends with a journal entry。 Despite the introduction to reoccurring characters (which I don't believe would hinder the reader's engagement) you are not limited to a prescribed sequential narrative order。 You can read the titles that are most provocative to you first。 。。。more

Two of the stories in this comic book were already shown in the Netflix series。 The fourth story has a surprising twist that I loved。

The integration of ancient Filipino folklore as well as not-so-ancient Philippine history in modern Metro Manila was done very well in this series。 The author created a rich setting, something for one's imagination to run wild in。 That, I think, is the strength of this series。About the individual stories themselves:The first few stories were interesting enough。The last one made me wish I'd brought the physical copy of the book so I could throw it against a wall。 The story is about how Darna (yea The integration of ancient Filipino folklore as well as not-so-ancient Philippine history in modern Metro Manila was done very well in this series。 The author created a rich setting, something for one's imagination to run wild in。 That, I think, is the strength of this series。About the individual stories themselves:The first few stories were interesting enough。The last one made me wish I'd brought the physical copy of the book so I could throw it against a wall。 The story is about how Darna (yeah, that Darna) had her stone (does it have a specific name?) stolen by Ding, who "only wanted her to stop having to work so hard to fight for others。" Because of that, she wasn't able to defend herself when men assaulted her, and Ding, taking on the stone, went on a rampage to avenge her。 Then, at the end, there's a scene with a super-powered Ding taking a frail Darna away from Earth to save her from more suffering。How do you take the most popular superhero in Philippine pop culture--who happens to be a woman--take away her powers, have her assaulted by a group of men, then have some other man--the same one who stole her powers--swoop in to be her saviour? There are so many things wrong with this that if I actually take the time to enumerate them it would take me hours。This particular twist on the Darna story is the book's worst offense against its female characters, but there were others as well。 They're not quite as egregious, but noticeable enough that by the time I got to the Darna story, I wasn't really surprised by the direction it was taken。The reason this is a 2 of 5 stars and not a 1 is because a) this was written years ago so I'll give it some leeway, and b) the other stories were not horrible and even funny at some points。I will leave with this: there are many more good stories out there by Filipino authors。 Great, amazing stories, even。 By women。 With multiple female characters who have agency, not just one。 Some of them are also inspired by our myths and legends and given a modern twist。 We should all give those stories recognition too。 。。。more

Bought because of the hype。 To be honest, I had high expectations because of rave reviews and Netflix getting in must mean it's something。 However, for those who did not grow up in the Philippines, I'm not sure how they can enjoy this book。 Identifying with things in the book may be one of the only few good things in it。 Other than that, the stories are too loose。 The graphics also not as well planned。 For the artist to emphasize situations, there needs to be a buildup, or a big panel for moment Bought because of the hype。 To be honest, I had high expectations because of rave reviews and Netflix getting in must mean it's something。 However, for those who did not grow up in the Philippines, I'm not sure how they can enjoy this book。 Identifying with things in the book may be one of the only few good things in it。 Other than that, the stories are too loose。 The graphics also not as well planned。 For the artist to emphasize situations, there needs to be a buildup, or a big panel for momentous event。 But there's none here。 Sometimes the reader is left hanging。。 Did that just happen? ★★★★ // Trese is such a cool heroine。 I like that she’s kinda emotionally detached。 My favourite chapter / case was the one with the Tikbalang。 The race was really cool。 One thing I like about this as well is the pure, unadultered Filipino brand of humor。 I learn a lot about myths, too!I am excited to read the other volumes, but unfortunately I only have until Volume 3 + Bloodlines。 Might have to wait until next year for Vols 4-6。Side note: I watched the animated adaptation on Netflix and really ★★★★ // Trese is such a cool heroine。 I like that she’s kinda emotionally detached。 My favourite chapter / case was the one with the Tikbalang。 The race was really cool。 One thing I like about this as well is the pure, unadultered Filipino brand of humor。 I learn a lot about myths, too!I am excited to read the other volumes, but unfortunately I only have until Volume 3 + Bloodlines。 Might have to wait until next year for Vols 4-6。Side note: I watched the animated adaptation on Netflix and really enjoyed it。 I hope it gets a second season because we definitely need more of Trese and the gang。 。。。more
